You Actually Know Me
  • A little background
  • The big break

3
What Does A Good Photograph Do?
  • Depends on it’s purpose
  • Promotes the course
  • Educate – Sell - Document
  • Promotes the Architect – Owner – Superintendent
  • Daily fee – Resort – Private Club

4
What Makes A Good Photograph?
  • Mother Nature provides the light
  • The architect provides the pallet or canvas
  • The superintendent provides the colors
5
The Technical Stuff Behind
That Photograph
  •  Measure or meter the light
  •  Choose the shutter speed or aperture
  •  The lens makes a difference
  •  To filter or not to filter
  •  Film – Hype or truth
  •  The last item – The camera

6
Questions - Are You Ready for Part II
  • A journey starts with a direction and a partner
7
Before We Start – A Story
8
How To Take Great Photographs
  • The light – You must meter it
  • A meter sees only 18% gray
  • What does 18% gray mean
  • Film needs ‘light’ to ‘fill-up’
  • Proper exposure = a full ‘bucket’ of light
  • Two controls for light – Shutter and Aperture
9
The Shutter as a Controller of Light
  • The full ‘bucket’ theory
  • All shutter speeds are 1/2 or double the next one
  • 1 second - 1/2 - 1/4 - 1/8 - 1/15 - 1/30 - 1/60 - 1/125 - 1/250 - 1/500 - 1/1000
  • To fill the ‘bucket’ allow     the faucet to stay open    long enough
  • Too long is overexposed
  • Too short is underexposed
10
The Aperture as a Controller of  Light
  • The full bucket theory
  • Each F/stop lets in 1/2 or double the next one
  • F/2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - 8 - 11 - 16 - 22 - 32
  • To fill the ‘bucket’ open the faucet wide or narrow until enough light is admitted
  • Too much is overexposed
  • Too little is underexposed

11
What the Aperture Looks Like
  • Each hole admits a specific amount of light
12
Why Choose Shutter Speed or Aperture
  • What does your photograph need? – Pick One
  • Shutter controls motion
  • Aperture controls depth of field
13
Choosing The Shutter Speed
  • A moving object requires speed
  • A speed of 1/250 to 1/1000 of a second
  • Drawback – Lack of depth of field
  • You may need fast film – Smaller bucket

14
Choosing the Aperture
  • A small aperture gives you more depth of field
  • Use F/11 to F/22
  • Drawback – Motion of subject
  • You may need a tripod
15
Using Shutter and Aperture Together
  • Any combination of shutter and aperture shown below will give you correct exposure
16
The Lens Makes a Difference
  • The focal length = what magnification
  • Wide Angle – 24 to 35 mm = 75o view
  • Normal – 50mm - Human Eye = 50o view
  • Telephoto – 85 to 300mm+ = 25o to 8o view
  • Zooms are a great tool
17
Depth of Field – The Factors
  • Focal length of the lens – longer = less depth
  • The F-stop employed – wide open = less depth
  • Distance to the subject – close = less depth
18
To Filter or Not to Filter
  • The right filter for the right job
  • Skylight or warming filter - Protection
  • Sky enhancing filters – Don’t over do it
  • Polarizing filter – A must for landscapes

19
Film – Hype or Truth
  • Film has specific purposes
  • Film speed equals film sharpness
  • ASA/ISO of 50 is slow – fine grain
  • ASA/ISO of 100-200 is medium
  • ASA/ISO of 400 plus is fast
  • Kodak print film is warmer – good for people
  • Fuji slide film is cooler – good for golf courses

20
The Camera – What’s Best
  • Rangefinder – Little window
  • SLR – Look through the lens
  • Digital cameras – small image
  • Changeable lens or zoom
  • Can screw on a filter
  • Accepts a flash unit
  • Major brands – Buy local

21
What Do You Want to Photograph?
  • Some of you want to shoot courses
  • Some of you want to shoot what really matters
22
Shoot Like a Pro - Overnight
  • Shoot at an angle to the light
  • Shoot Late - Early & Different = Rich colors
  • Use a flash outdoors – Especially for people
  • Use a tripod – Because you learned something
23
Questions – Or Are You Confused?
  • Time for a break – Can I give you any ideas of what a good assistant is worth?
